Learn a Little About Tinton Falls, NJ!
Tinton Falls, New Jersey is a borough in Monmouth County. It covers 15.6 square miles and has a population of nearly 18,000 people. It is bordered by several townships and boroughs including: Colts Neck, Eatontown, Middletown, Neptune, Ocean, Red Bank, Shrewsbury, and Wall.
Tinton Falls is named after the Tinton Manor plantation, but is also home to a large waterfall. At one time, the Tinton Falls were estimated to be about 30 feet high, but erosion has caused this height to diminish. It is still the highest waterfall in New Jersey’s coastal area. The Overlook by the Falls is a park providing trails for residents and visitors to view a variety of wildlife as well as the falls.
The borough is served by a variety of New Jersey and local roads, providing access to New York City, Newark, and Philadelphia. The Garden State Parkway and Route 66 both pass through Tinton Falls. NJ Transit also offers access to the area.
Tinton Falls, NJ was part of the area of New Jersey purchased from the Lenni Lanape Native Americans. Settlers were drawn to the area due to the falls and river providing water power and iron ore deposits. Soon after the land was purchased, James Grover opened the ironworks, one of the oldest in the nation, which became central to the growing community.
Tinton Falls was originally part of Shrewsbury Township. However in 1950, it was decided that it should be a separate borough, and was incorporated under the name New Shrewsbury. However, as a result of postal mix-ups, residents in 1975 decided to rename it to Tinton Falls, after the plantation where the original ironworks were located.
In addition to the ironworks, the river supported a grist mill and sawmill. Water power supplied the foundation of the economy for several centuries. Today, the Jersey Shore Premium Outlets, Tinton Falls Solar Farm, and Commvault systems, all call Tinton Falls home, along with its many proud residents.
Tinton Falls was once part of Shrewsbury Township, which was formed in 1693, and covered nearly 1,000 square miles. This large tract of land remained intact until 1750, when other townships began to break off from it. This gradual shift lasted until the development of Tinton Falls in 1950. Today it covers a mere 0.105 square miles and is the smallest municipality in New Jersey.
After the townships broke off, the remaining land was owned by the government, and called Camp Vail. This area was used to house the employees of Fort Monmouth and their families. The camp was scheduled to close after World War II, but the families instead bought the land from the government, and upheld the original charter for the town. Today it is a small residential community with a single store serving a variety of uses, and just over 1,100 residents.
Tinton Falls, New Jersey is a relatively new borough, and the last area to break off from Shrewsbury Township. With the water power generated by the river and the waterfalls, Tinton Falls has been a home to industry throughout its history. Today it welcomes shoppers to the outlets, and is a thriving residential suburban community.
