The city is located at the southern tip of New York State, along a harbor at the mouth of the Hudson River. It is approximately halfway between the cities of Boston and Washington D.C. The city is divided into five boroughs, each of which is a separate county: Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island. The boroughs are further divided into distinct neighborhoods, making New York a large conglomeration of many unique areas.
There are a variety of parks and monuments located within New York City, including the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, Riverbank State Park, Washington Square Park, and Central Park. These areas provide green space and recreation to the millions of residents, commuters, and visitors who flock into the city each day.
New York City was first discovered by Henry Hudson in 1609, as he sailed into New York Harbor. He claimed the area for the Dutch East India Company, and the area was then called New Netherland. European settlement began in 1624, and has been continuously settled ever since. Manhattan Island became to be known as New Amsterdam. However, the area was then ceded to British troops in 1664 and renamed New York.
New York served as a significant trading port and center of immigration throughout its history. It was also integral to the Revolutionary War, and was named the capital of the newfound country at the end of the war, before the capital was moved to Washington D.C. The fledgling government was set up in New York, including the inauguration of George Washington.
The city of New York was formed in its modern iteration when Brooklyn was consolidated into the larger city in 1898. With the subway system and large skyscrapers, New York quickly became a world power attracting immigrants from many nations, artists, businessmen, and others. New York’s history can be seen through the variety of architecture all around the city.
New York City is considered a global center of trade and international business, with banking, finance, retail, tourism, advertising, fashion, and the arts all centered in this city. Many industries have their own unique areas of the city, drawing businesses together.
