Geography

Westfield, New Jersey is a town located in Union County. It is situated within easy commuting distance to Newark and New York City, along the Raritan Valley Line of the New Jersey Transit System, making it an ideal location for commuters. It is primarily a residential suburban town, though it has a historic downtown with over 450 businesses that attract shoppers and visitors from throughout the region.

Westfield covers over 6.7 square miles of land, and has a population of over 30,000. The population has been steadily growing as more people are attracted to this town. It has an excellent school system, and has been voted as one of the safest cities in the United States, making it a popular choice for families.

History

The area that would become Westfield was first inhabited by the Lenni-Lanape Native Americans. During the latter half of the 17th century, the land was sold to first the Dutch and then the English, with the governor of New York purchasing the area for a variety of goods, including guns and wampum. The land that would become Westfield was given to John Baker.

Westfield became a village in 1720, and was incorporated as a town in 1794. Many of the original settlers’ names can be found amongst the street names that are in the town today. The original village is where the downtown area is now, continuing its long tradition of attracting people from the region to Westfield.

Since the end of the 19th century, Westfield has served as a primarily residential town. Because of its easy commute, actors, producers, executives, writers, and others have been drawn to this historic community, while working in nearby New York City. However, it also has a strong economic base in its business district.

Downtown Westfield, NJ

The downtown area of Westfield is considered to be one of the most charming shopping destinations in New Jersey. Because it is established in the area of the original village, it is both historic and beautiful. However, it contains a variety of shopping options including large chains such as Trader Joe’s, the Gap, and Lord & Taylor. In all there are over 450 stores and restaurants encompassing 1 million square feet of retail space.

The downtown area is also home to several memorials, honoring the heroes of wars including the Korean War, World War II, and the Spanish-American War. There is also the September 11 Memorial Park, honoring the residents of the town that died during the terrorist attacks on 9/11.

Westfield, New Jersey is considered one of the finest residential cities in the state. It is conveniently located 20 minutes away from Newark by train, and 50 minutes to New York City. With safe streets, an exciting downtown area, and excellent schools systems, many families are proud to call Westfield, NJ home.
