Morganville, New Jersey is located within the Marlboro Township in Monmouth County. It is an unincorporated community within the larger township, and also a census-designated place. Morganville covers 5.4 square miles of Marlboro’s 30.4 square miles. It has a population of 5,040, compared to Marlboro’s 40,200. The other census-designated place within the township is Robertsville, which has a population of 11,300. Marlboro as a whole has seen a steady population growth since the middle of the 20th century.
Morganville is serviced by the facilities of Marlboro Township, including the school district and recreation programs. Marlboro offers a summer outdoor concert series, and hosts a popular theater group. There are also a variety of parks, fields, trails, and a dog park for the use of residents.
Another popular activity in Marlboro is fossil hunting. The Big Brook runs through the town, and is a source for many types of fossils. The first dinosaur fossil in North America was found here in 1858, and dinosaur fossils have been found here as recently as 2009.
Like much of this region of New Jersey, Morganville was first occupied by the Lenni Lanape Native Americans, prior to the arrival of Dutch settlers in the 1620s and the English in the 1660s. What would become Marlboro was settled by a combination of English, Scottish, and Dutch settlers, including a large Quaker population. The Quakers established a town known as Topanemus, and began holding meetings in 1702. The church later played a significant role in the Revolutionary War.
Marlboro got its name from the large quantity of marl, a natural fertilizer that was in high demand throughout the colonies. Marlboro was incorporated as a town in 1848, and remained largely a rural town with dairy, potato, and tomato farms being prevalent.
With the coming of the railroad and other infrastructure, the nature of the town began to change, giving way to residential communities. Today many residents work in nearby New York City and other local towns.
Marlboro played a significant role in the Revolutionary War, most notably the Battle of Monmouth. Fought in late June, 1778, the battle highlighted the military prowess of General George Washington and became an unlikely victory for the Continental soldiers.
The battle began as the rear flank of the retreating British were attacked, under the lead of Charles Lee, Washington’s second in command. Lee's cautious maneuvers allowed the British to take an early command. However, Washington’s arrival on the battlefield and a change in command led to a standoff, ending when the British forces retreated during the overnight hours.
The Battle of Monmouth is noted for being hot in 100 degree temperatures, leading to almost as many casualties from heat stroke and dehydration as battle wounds. The legend is that a wife of a soldier, Molly Pitcher, kept bringing water to the soldiers from a nearby spring. In truth, it is believed to have been several women working together, bringing relief to the men.
Morganville, New Jersey is located in the historic and popular Marlboro Township. With industry, agriculture, and residential communities, this area is known for its location near the ocean and New York City.
