Geography
Avenel, New Jersey is a census-designated community within Woodbridge Township. It is located in Middlesex County, in central part of the state. Avenel is one of the most populous unincorporated communities in Woodbridge.
Woodbridge covers an area of 24.5 square miles, with Avenel occupying 3.5 square miles of that area. Avenel’s population is approximately 17,000, while the larger township boasts nearly 10,000. This makes Woodbridge the 6th most populous municipality in New Jersey.
The Garden State Parkway runs through Woodbridge for 7.5 miles, with several exits into the township. The New Jersey Turnpike also cuts through Woodbridge, with 2 service areas in and near the town. There are also a variety of smaller roads providing access throughout the region. The New Jersey Transit’s North Jersey Coast Line offers service in Avenel and Woodbridge, with the Metropark station offers service to Newark, Penn Station, Washington D.C., and Boston.
History
Woodbridge is the oldest original township in New Jersey, first granted a charter in 1669 by King Charles II. It was incorporated several times, in 1693 and 1798. The township was given its name after one of its earliest settlers, Reverend John W. Woodbridge of Newbury, Massachusetts.
The community of Avenel was formed in 1901, in the location of the village Demarest on the Hill. Avenel was named for Captain Damarest’s daughter.
Avenel, NJ is a community with a number of services. Its fire department was founded in 1913, only 10 years after the community itself. The community celebrated its anniversary with a community parade and picnic. In addition to three public schools, there is a residential center for developmentally disabled people, the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center, and the East Jersey State Prison.
Industry
In addition to the service-based centers in Avenel, there is also a strong economic base. Within Avenel is an Amazon.com fulfillment center, covering over 565,000 square feet and providing a number of jobs for the region. Avenel is also home to the Bradco Supply flagship location. Bradco is one of the largest distributors of building materials, including roofing supplies, in the nation.
Bradco was founded in 1966, with a single warehouse in Avenel, by Barry Segal. It began to expand in the early 1970s, and by the year 2000, had 78 locations in 17 states. Since then it has continued to grow, and now operates 130 locations in 30 states.
Woodbridge also has a number of businesses including the third-biggest mall in New Jersey and the headquarters of Wakefern Food Corporation.
